Tips for Furnace Maintenance

Energy costs are higher than ever, so keeping your heating and cooling systems operating properly is ever more important. Your furnace will operate more efficiently if you regularly take the time to complete a few simple tasks.

  • Change or Clean Your Filter: Over time, your furnace filter will accumulate dust and dirt particles. This will render the filter useless and greatly decrease the efficiency of the heater. Change your filter every 6 to 8 weeks to avoid this.
  • Clear Outdoor Exhaust Vents: This is especially important in the winter months. Be sure to keep all obstructions such as snow and ice clear of the outdoor intake and exhaust valves. Blocked vents can cause a host of problems, including backed up carbon monoxide fumes, a very dangerous and potentially fatal problem.
  • Schedule Annual Service: An annual service call will do many things to help your furnace run efficiently. The technician can make adjustments to maximize efficiency, or identify problems in their early stages to avoid more costly repairs or even replacement.
  • Perform DIY Maintenance: You can perform plenty of simple do-it-yourself maintenance tasks on your furnace. Some furnace models need their blower motors lubricated regularly. Also, you can perform routine exams for cracks or blockages in your vents. The condensation drain should also be checked regularly to avoid backup.

Every furnace is different, so always consult your owner's manual and any manufacturer's guidelines before performing any maintenance. And, as a reminder, never perform any maintenance without first shutting down the power to your furnace.
